For those of you who use Gmail March 26, 2009

See below.  I had used a Google Docs account for a Board that I am on.  Someone from a Board member's company was able to see that I hosted docs on Google and requested access.  This worried me as I was keeping personal data for the entire Board through that account.  I have cancelled that account and no longer use that feature in my current Gmail account.

Google Security Questioned

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alleging that Google may be making deceptive claims about the security of documents stored in its Gmail and Google Docs services. The complaint cites an error that allowed users to access documents without proper permission. Google contends the error affected only users who had already shared documents and involved less than .5% of all documents held. EPIC also claims that, while Google promises secure data storage, the company's terms of service note that it is not liable for harm. EPIC is urging the FTC to investigate.

The Inner Circle The Inner Circle by Mari Jungstedt

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was a very enjoyable read. The plot was fast-paced and the characters believable. This modern tale mystery is interwoven with Viking mythology. The author balanced the history and the mystery well.

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
Excellent book for the beginner cook. Many basics are included such as how to cut an onion, tips on buying produce, how to carve a chicken, etc. Pictures are included for more detailed tasks. The recipes are delicious and written simply. This book helped me get over my anxiety of cooking with its clearly written instructions and hints.

The Night Gardener The Night Gardener by George P. Pelecanos

rating: 2 of 5 stars
It is readily apparent to the reader that George Pelacanos writes screenplays as this book reads very much like one.

What I liked about this audio book is that Pelacanos portrays Washington, D.C. in a positive light despite the criminal elements. It is easy to negatively stereotype the District and its residents in a novel as other authors have done. Pelicanos takes an evenhanded approach to heroes, villains, and bystanders alike. He features Southeast D.C. as a place where real people live, not just a place the drug dealers and gang members running amok. Also, the narrator does a great job at speaking for different genders, classes, and ages through the specter of characters.

What I didn’t like about this novel is that the focus was on interpersonal relationships rather than the mystery itself. (Children being murdered and dumped in community gardens is a compelling crime to solve.) But the author focuses on the characters’ personal relationships and struggles more than the actual case. He also is eager to share his mastery of urban slang and lexicon, which could get tiresome.

An overarching theme of this book is diversity and the hypocrisy of whites who claim to “celebrate diversity.” While I agree with Pelacanos on these issues, as a reader I don’t need a heavy-handed lecture about diversity. Diversity issues can be addressed in fictional form and other authors have made their case adeptly. Near the end of the tale, Pelacanos has the primary detective and his wife discussing diversity between themselves as if they were ready to draft an editorial on the topic.

Last night I went to this incredible event.  The speakers and panelists were so engaging.  I was really surprised to see this much diversity of color and experience in Greenwich, CT!  The evening was inspiring and fun.  I’ll definitely keep an eye out for other Women’s Leadership events at the YWCA.
